Gareth Drury Visits Coombes Reservoir

gdcoombesDynamite’s Gareth Drury recently received a call from Andy Bennett offering him a days fishing that he just simply couldn’t refuse!

The offer was to fish Coombes Reservoir; a water that required a natural approach, something which Gareth found refreshing after usually targeting commercial fisheries.

On the way to the venue, the pair stopped and had a quick fish at Manchester’s River Goyt. This small city centre waterway boasts some cracking chub, and both anglers got amongst some of its occupants.

On arrival, I mixed some groundbait that would be ideal for my target species – Bream. My mix consisted off Dynamite Baits Silver X Bream Fishmeal and XL Original Brown Crumb. To this he added a generous amount of 1mm Swim Stim Amino Origional Carp Pellets and a tin of XL Sweetcorn.gdcoombes3

“The venue was beautiful, and too top it off was free fishing! For such an incredibly prolific venue this really was a breath of fresh air. What really amazed me was just how quiet it was, there was certainly no trouble finding a swim!” Gareth explained

Gareth started by casting a feeder full of bait for a good 30 minutes to get a bed of bait down on the deck. He knew full well that the sheer amount of fish in the water would mean that he couldn’t possibly over feed the them, and that it if one of the vast shoals moved in he would need all the bait he had to hold them.

Action came straight from the off for Gareth, and he couldn’t believe it when his first chuck resulted in a 10oz skimmer. The action carried on like this for him all day, and he managed to end the session with a cracking bag of skimmers.

Interestingly he didn’t land any roach, although Andy did. Gareth put this down to Andy fishing a more traditional caster and Frenzied Hempseed approach, whilst he fished pellet and corn.
